Directions to Playa Langosta from the Liberia Airport (Daniel Oduber Quiros Internacional Aeropuerto)

NOTE: I used HWY numbers and street names, but most of the roads and streets are un marked. Get map.me app before you go to CR and download the CR map.

Via Rental Car:

Someone from the rental car company will be waiting at the exit of the Customs area of the airport. A half a block walk over to the shuttle bus parking area, and the shuttle bus will drive out from the airport onto Hwy 21. Try to remember which way you turn from the airport. A left turn onto Hwy 21 is east toward Liberia, a right turn on Hwy 21 is west away from Liberia.

After you have picked up your rental car, you want to head West on Hwy 21, away from Liberia. You should be headed toward Palmira, or Filadelfia de Guanacaste, or Belen, and generally will be following the signs for Playa Grande.

Its 40 kilometers on Hwy 21 to Belen and you’ll drive through the small town, past the center green square (on your right). About 4 blocks after the center square, you’ll turn RIGHT on Hwy 155, toward Santa Ana, or Playa Grande, or Playa Tamarindo.

About 4 kms you will enter Santa Ana and drive past the center grassy square (on your LEFT side), 1 block up the road ends at at T. Turn LEFT to follow the road to Playa Grande.

About 21 Kms further you’ll enter Huacas and there is a Left turn “Y” in the road. The right hand road goes to Brasilito and Playa Flamingo, and Playa Grande. You want to turn LEFT at the Y and go to Tamarindo. You might see the sign for Tamarindo just after you turn (how not helpful is that?)

You are still on Hwy 155 and headed toward Tamarindo. About 15kms, you should see the sign for Tamarindo pointed right. Turn RIGHT at the sharp downhill turnoff. If you miss this turn, you’ll go 2 blocks and be in a little town Villa Real with a speedbump at the end of the town, turn around and then Left toward tamarindo.

You’ll be on Avenue de las Palmas or Calle Central, which will take you into downtown Tamarindo in ~5 Kms. Follow Calle Central into downtown past the strip mall places, where Avenue Central Y’s to the LEFT uphill slightly. Go LEFT. (if you miss this, you end up at a dead end parking lot)

Follow Avenue Central up over the small rise, and bear RIGHT at the Y, onto Calle Cardinal. It might turn to dirt road after about 200 feet, then back to asphalt. Follow Calle Cardinal for ~1 kms and there is another Y. RIGHT at this Y also.

Calle Cardinal turns into Avenue Espania, which is a loop. (If you missed the RIGHT at the Y, you can just drive all the way around.)

Take the 2nd LEFT is Calle Andalucia, and then immediate RIGHT into the gate for the La Esquina Resort condos. Open the gate and drive in, or wait for the security guard to open the gate.

Getting to the Playa Langosta beach.

Walk out the gate at La Esquina, and turn LEFT.  Then LEFT onto Av Espania and walk about 200 feet and look for a trail RIGHT off into the woods. It’s about a 100yds to the beach. Turn left and walk toward the nice beach at the Beach Resort.

Or keep walking on Av Espania toward the Barcelo Langosta Beash Resort. There is a parking are for about 4 cars at the West/North end of the resort, at a open lot. Walk in on the trail and it will come out in front of the resort and right at the good area of the beach.

How to get to Playa Avellana from Playa Langosta

Drive out the gate at La Esquina, and turn LEFT.  Then RIGHT onto Av Espania headed back into Tamarindo. LEFT at the 1st Y onto Calle Cardinal, and LEFT at the Y onto Av Central, up over the little rise, and RIGHT onto Calle Central at the strip mall in downtown Tamarindo.

Follow Calle Central back out to the sharp turn off HWY 155, and turn RIGHT toward Villa Real, HWY 152 south (yeah the number changed, but you’ll never know it). Villa Real has a speed bump at the end of town.

Drive about 6 kms and watch for the road that bears off RIGHT slightly. Follow signs for the JW Marriott. If you miss it, you’ll notice that Hwy 152 takes a hard right and starts heading East and you went through Hernandez (really small town). Turn around.

Follow the road for maybe 2kms and at Hacienda Pinilla bear LEFT, and it will turn into a dirt road. Follow that dirt road for about 8 kms, going through San Jose de Pinilla. Watch for the sign for Lola’s to the right. RIGHT onto the dirt road to Lola’s. There is a parking area, the guys watching the cars like a $1 2 (1000). There is parking on the sides of the narrow road, but its more likely your car might get dinged on the road. Walk into the parking lot, bearing right and you’ll be on the beach, which extends North (right) for 1-2 Kms.
